One of the most beloved old postcards of Provincetown, titled “Studio Gardens,” shows a clipped-gable cottage — its jerkinhead roofline a quiet nod to Normandy Revival architecture — nestled in a bed of flowers on an impossibly quaint little lane. The place really exists, and it is widely regarded as one of Provincetown’s most iconic homes: 2 Daggett Lane, tucked behind the Captain’s House at 496 Commercial Street. The studio and the house behind it were once a single property. In 1910, Alice (Douglas) Grant, who owned 496 Commercial, built the cottage as a dedicated studio for her husband, Lawrence Grant — a Pittsburgh-born painter who had met Alice while both were living in Europe. The Grants established at 496 Commercial what would become one of Provincetown’s great artistic households: Nancy Whorf, who would later raise her own family at 14 Howland Street and become a celebrated painter in her own right, lived there too, and the tradition of art-making that Alice and Lawrence seeded at the property carries forward to this day through their great-granddaughter, Julia Whorf Kelly, herself a fourth-generation painter. The studio passed through distinguished hands. Dr. Joseph Robinson — watercolorist, musician, and chiropractor — owned it from some point until 1977, when it was acquired by Albert “Al” Davis (b. 1934), a potter and sculptor of humorous and whimsical figures, often cats. Davis used it as both home and studio for nearly three decades. His handiwork can be seen at Napi’s, among other places around town, and he is represented by the Cortile Gallery in the old Lancy mansion at 230 Commercial. In 2004, artist and architect Ted Chapin (b. 1950) — whose own house is at 6 Pearl Street — designed a thoughtful renovation that honored the building’s origins. The original exterior volume and much of its historic fabric were preserved. A 1970s rear addition was integrated rather than erased. The large north-facing studio window — essential to the building’s character and its century-long history as an artist’s workspace — was retained. The interior now unfolds beneath soaring 20-foot ceilings, with wide plank floors and a den/atelier overlooking the great room below, reachable by a library ladder, that is as well-suited to painting and drawing today as the space Lawrence Grant first claimed for his easel in 1910. Most dramatically, enormous hemlock beams salvaged from the demolished wing of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum were milled into the floors and stair treads, lending the interior a scale and gravitas entirely in keeping with the cottage’s deep artistic heritage.

Other Details to Note

We take great pride in accurately describing our home so you know what you will be renting. We realize that every group of guests has specific rental requirements, and what one group might love could pose a challenge for others. Being part of a private lane in Provincetown, it's important to be mindful of noise levels to ensure a harmonious experience for all residents. Our neighbors live here year-round, so please be mindful that your vacation is their full-time home. When you're coming and going, please be extremely quiet and keep conversations down. Quiet hours for all outdoor areas are from 8pm - 8am. Please be aware that noise might travel among homes on our street, and it’s difficult for us to control any noise from our neighbors. Most of the time when we’re there, we hear nothing. Note that our home contains valuable artwork and a tall ladder to the office / loft (which can also be accessed via the standard interior staircase by walking onto the porch and then in the loft door). Please use extreme caution if walking up or down the ladder. And as a house rule, all children must not climb the ladder. It will look very tempting to children of all ages. If you intend to bring children, please heed our warning and keep a close eye on your children. The upstairs loft has a railing and two doors that latch into the floor. Please do not lean on these doors, and double-check that they are latched for safety. If you bring children into the loft, they must remain supervised at all times. Our home is not suitable for parties, large gatherings, or pre-event hosting. We realize that we have a home with a large interior. You are welcome to have a few friends over, but please use your judgment. Do not bring the party back here. Don't have a huge pre-game gathering. A few friends are fine. We use and love this home throughout the year, and we are delighted to share it with respectful guests. We ask that you treat the property with the same care and consideration you would your own home and leave everything in the same condition in which you found it. • No parties or events • Smoke-free property (interior and exterior) • Children must not climb the ladder • Children must be supervised at all times By booking the home, you acknowledge and agree to these occupancy terms. Your delightful stay at our home awaits!
